He is a right-handed batsman who bowls medium pace and short.

He was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He is the younger brother of Sanjay Yadav who played for India in the 2016 ICC World Cup. He currently plays for Bengaluru Bulls in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

He made his List A debut for Bengaluru Bulls in the 2013–14 Indian Premier League season against Royal Challengers Bangalore. He played one game for Bengaluru Bulls in the 2014–15 Indian Premier League season against Kolkata Knight Riders. In his first match, he scored a run off seven balls to help Bengaluru Bulls to a 10–8 win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the Delhi Cricket Club Ground in Delhi, India on 26 October 2015.

He was called as a replacement batsman by M S Dhoni and was required to bat twice in their second innings defeat by Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens Cricket Stadium, Mumbai on 12 November 2015. It was reported that Suryakumar will be part of the squad that will play under new coach Ravi Shastri, who has been appointed as the new coach of the India cricket team for the next 5 years. Suryakumar Yadav made his debut in the first-class against Delhi during the 2010-11 Ranji Trophy. He was the only player to score a fifty for Mumbai in its first innings, as well as putting together a decent seventy-three. He has since become a regular part of the team.
